AI Search Optimization for Small Business: LeapOne vs Profound, Otterly, Peec and Semrush (2026)
Customers increasingly ask an AI assistant — ChatGPT, Google's AI Overview, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude — "who's the best one near me?" before they open a map or a directory.
Two independent surveys published weeks apart in early 2026 measured the shift and landed in the same place. BrightLocal found the share of consumers asking AI for a business recommendation jumped from 6% to 45% in a single year, making AI the third most popular source of business recommendations behind only Google and Facebook (Local Consumer Review Survey, February 2026, 1,002 US adults). Yext, surveying separately, found 47% of adults had used an AI tool for local search in the past month alone (Consumer Search Behaviors Report, March 2026, 1,120 US adults).
One survey can be an outlier. Two unrelated ones arriving at the same number is a change in how people find businesses. Worth stating plainly, though: both are US samples. No equivalent survey of Canadian consumers has been published — so treat the exact percentage as directional here, and the direction as well established.
That has created a new category of software — variously called AI SEO, AI search optimization, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) or Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) tools. They all try to answer the same question: when someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation in my category, does it name me?
This is an honest guide to the main options, written by the team behind one of them, so take our positioning with that in mind. We've tried to be fair about where other tools are genuinely stronger.
What AI search optimization actually involves
Most tools in this category do some mix of:
- Measure how often AI engines mention or recommend you for the questions your customers actually ask.
- Track share of voice — how you compare to competitors inside those AI answers.
- Show citations — which websites and sources the AI reads before it answers.
- Recommend or generate fixes — content, structured data, or specific actions that close the gaps.
The real differences are which engines they cover, who they're built for (enterprise vs. small business), and whether they only monitor or also help you fix the problem.
Tracking and monitoring is the easy half
Almost every tool here can tell you that you weren't mentioned. Far fewer tell you what to change.
If you have a marketing team, a dashboard is enough — they'll know what to do with it. If you're an owner running the business yourself, a score with no next step is a subscription that quietly becomes a monthly reminder that you have a problem. Look hard at what a tool produces after the measurement: content, schema markup, a prioritised action list, or nothing.
How to judge an AI search optimization tool
- The engines that matter to you. The ones your customers actually use — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude — matter more than a long list that includes engines almost nobody touches.
- Local and competitor context. Can it test the real questions people ask in your city, and show who the AI names instead of you?
- Does it fix, or just report? Closing the gap usually needs content and structured data, not another chart.
- Price and simplicity. Per-prompt enterprise pricing adds up fast and is hard to forecast. A flat, predictable plan is easier to commit to.
The software, compared
LeapOne — built for small businesses
This is us. LeapOne audits five AI engines (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude) using the real questions customers ask in your category and city, scores your AI visibility, tracks your share of voice against local competitors, and — the part most monitoring tools skip — generates the content and structured data to close the gaps, plus a short list of monthly "Moves" to work through. One flat plan at CA$60/month, no per-prompt billing (pricing). It's tuned for local search and works in English and French. Best for: an owner-run local business that wants to know what to do next, not just a score. Honest limits: we track five engines rather than ten, we're a one-plan product, we're a younger brand than the incumbents below, and we currently serve businesses in Canada — there's a waitlist if you're elsewhere.
Profound — enterprise scale
Profound is an enterprise-grade AEO platform covering ten-plus AI engines with a very large real-user prompt dataset, share-of-voice and citation analytics, and content "agents." It's powerful and pricey, billed by prompt volume and aimed at large brands and agencies. Best for: enterprise marketing teams with budget. Less ideal for: a single local small business.
Otterly AI — affordable monitoring
Otterly is an accessible AI-search monitoring tool with low entry pricing, GEO/URL audits, and SEO integrations like CSV export and Looker Studio. Its core plan covers the main engines, with others as paid add-ons. Best for: marketers and small agencies who mainly want low-cost monitoring and exports. Less focused on: local-business specifics and done-for-you content.
Semrush AI Toolkit — if you already live in Semrush
Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit is an add-on to its well-known SEO suite, with an AI Visibility Score, competitor and prompt research, and an AI site audit. Best for: teams already paying for Semrush who want AI visibility in the same dashboard. Trade-off: it's an add-on cost with usage caps, and it leans analytics rather than content generation.
Peec AI — citation-focused monitoring
Peec is a clean, citation-focused monitoring tool aimed at marketing and SEO teams who want to see which sources AI engines pull from. Best for: in-house marketers tracking brand mentions across engines. Less focused on: generating the fixes.
Others worth knowing
Promptwatch is another citation-focused monitoring tool. Scrunch AI is an enterprise platform with deep technical audits. AthenaHQ targets larger commercial brands. All are capable — and all are built for marketers, agencies, or enterprises rather than an owner-run small business.
Which one fits your situation
- A small or local service business (clinic, trades, restaurant, salon, professional services) with no in-house SEO team: start with LeapOne — it's built for exactly this, and it generates the fixes rather than only the score.
- An SEO team or agency already using a broad suite: Semrush's AI Toolkit or Otterly slot in nicely.
- A large or global brand that needs maximum engine coverage and enterprise analytics: Profound or Scrunch.
Where LeapOne fits
The tools above are good, and most are built for marketers, agencies and enterprises who already understand SEO and have a budget for it. A small business owner is a different user: no SEO team, no time to interpret a dashboard, and a need to know what to do next rather than what the number is this week.
That's the gap LeapOne was built for — measure across the five engines that matter, compare you against the competitors AI names instead of you, and hand you the content and the few monthly actions that get you recommended more often. If you want to see the shape of the output before signing up, there's a full sample report.
We publish our own measurements rather than only selling the tool. Across 2,030 AI answers about rehabilitation clinics, roughly two in three clinics were never named at all in any answer. A follow-up study of optometry practices found that being top on Google does not automatically mean being top in AI. Asked the same question three times, Google's top result barely moved — the same practice stayed #1 in 22 of 24 questions — while the AI engines kept changing their minds: ChatGPT held a stable #1 in only 7 of 24, Gemini 6, Perplexity 5. That's the problem this category exists to solve, and it's why we weight "does it generate the fix" so heavily above.
Most of the tools above offer a free trial or demo, and so do we — your first audit is free. The best way to choose is to run your own business through two or three of them and see which one tells you something you can actually act on.

FAQ
What is the best AI search optimization tool for a small business?
For an owner-run small or local business, LeapOne is built specifically for that case — it audits five AI engines using the questions customers really ask in your category and city, compares you to local competitors, and generates the content and structured data to close the gaps rather than only reporting a score. It's a single flat plan, works in English and French, and is tuned for Canadian local search. Larger brands and agencies with an in-house SEO team may prefer broader platforms like Profound, Semrush, Otterly or Scrunch.
What is the difference between AI SEO, AEO and GEO?
They mostly describe the same work under different names. AI SEO and AI search optimization are the plain-language terms; AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) are the industry ones. All of them mean getting an AI assistant to name and cite your business in its answer, rather than getting a page to rank in a list of blue links.
How do I track whether AI mentions my business?
Ask each engine the questions your customers would ask, several times, and record whether you're named. Answers vary between runs, so a single check tells you very little — you need repeated measurements across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude to see a real pattern. AI visibility tracking and brand monitoring tools automate exactly this; LeapOne runs it on a schedule and shows you which competitors are named in your place.
How much do AI SEO tools cost?
It ranges widely. As of mid-2026, enterprise platforms bill by prompt volume and can run from roughly US$99 to over US$1,000 a month. Monitoring-only tools start lower, around US$29 a month. LeapOne is a single flat monthly plan with everything included. Pricing in this space changes often, so always check each provider's site.
Do I need an AI SEO tool if I already do SEO?
Ranking well on Google does not automatically mean an AI assistant recommends you — they are separate systems that read different sources and change their answers between runs. Traditional SEO tools measure rankings and traffic; AI SEO tools measure whether you get named in the answer itself. If a meaningful share of your customers now start with an AI assistant, the second measurement is the one that predicts whether they ever reach you.
